The 2019 Alcohol and Drugs in History Society conference takes its cue from recent shifts in attitudes towards, and understandings of, intoxicants and psychoactive substances to explore the drivers of change throughout history in ideas about, and actions on, such materials.
Deadline Extended to September 20: Call for individual papers, panels, or roundtables. The Association of Global South Studies annual conference will be Nov. 18-20 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The conference is a small gathering of scholars of multiple disciplines dedicated to understanding the politics, economy, history, arts, and ecology of the Global South.

Historian and archaeologist Abigail Coppins will explain how over 2,000 black and mixed-race soldiers came to be imprisoned in Hampshire during the 1790s. Her research is based on an exciting new exhibition now on at Portchester Castle (English Heritage) that tells their fascinating stories.
