Montana The Magazine of Western History, a publication of the Montana Historical Society, is pleased to announce a contest for the best article on the history of the American West by an emerging scholar. We welcome submissions from graduate students, early career faculty, and independent scholars. The deadline for submissions is January 4, 2021.

The Modern Western – the format of the
traditional Western has found new life across
popular media formats and we are
interested in exploring this further. Recent
examples include, but are not
limited to, The Last of Us Part II, Red
Dead Redemption and Red Dead
Redemption 2, The Mandalorian
, and HBO’s
Westworld.

We would like submissions by the end of April to allow for time for peer review.

today we feature part 2 of our interview with Pekka Hämäläinen to talk about his new book Lakota America: A New History of Indigenous Power, published by Yale University Press.

It is striking that something like Little Bighorn, which has attracted so much attention, is absent from the Lakota's own writing. Much of your book is devoted to the nineteenth century, what do the Lakota focus on and what do they emphasize in their histories for that period?
