How should historians respond to Alabama's strict voter ID law and other recent voting rights legislation?

Recently Alabama passed stict voter ID laws and then closed necessary DMV's to gain proper identification.  How can or should historians of the black experience, and civil rights activity in particular, respond to the recent move to restrict enfranchisement 50 years after the Voting Rights Act?
