New book: The Captive Sea

Dear colleagues,


It’s a pleasure to announce the publication of my book, The Captive Sea: Slavery, Communication, and Commerce in Early Modern Spain and the Mediterraneanin the University of Pennsylvania Press. The book—based on records composed by Iberian and Maghribi Christians, Jews, and Muslims—examines the connected histories of early modern Spain, Ottoman Algiers, and Morocco, and by extension the entangled histories of Muslim and Christian captives.

Call for Papers


The 50th Annual Conference of the ASPHS will take place in Barcelona, Spain, from July 10 -13, 2019 at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, hosted by the Institut d'Història Jaume Vicens Vives. A welcoming reception will be held on Wednesday evening, July 10, and panels will run Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The banquet will take place on Friday 12 July. 


The Film Forum Celebrates the Cinema of Jorge Semprún (NY, October 3-11 2018)

Dear H-Spain members,

The Film Forum (209 West Houston Street, NY, NY) will be celebrating the films of Jorge Semprún with a week-long festival from October 3-11. Please come see Stavisky, Z, La Guerre est finie, and L'aveu. The series will also be the US premiere of the only film Semprún directed: Les Deux Memoires, a rare and powerful documentary about the Spanish Civil war and its long, brutal legacy.

All films will have English subtitles. Here is the complete program:
