Today, sadly, I just wanted you to know that Michael went to see Karl Marx on 20 May, after 5 years of struggle with bile duct cancer.

Normally I would not tout a book review in this forum, but I want to make sure that readers of this list are introduced to Zhang Jishun's 张济顺 terrific new book Yuanqu de dushi: 1950 niandai de Shanghai 远去的都市:1950 年代的上 海 [A City Displaced: Shanghai in the 1950s]. Beijing: Shehui kexue wenxian chubanshe, 2015. I offer a discussion of the book in the current issue of Journal of Modern Chinese History, 10:1, 106-112.
