Re: Your thoughts? Reconsidering Jefferson's quote: "We are all republicans, we are all federalists "

I checked a dozen newspapers in the online series of Early American Newspapers and found some disagreement on the use of uppercase for "Federalists" and "Republicans." Most used uppercase for the designation of a party. But a few newspapers simply used federalists or republicans. I looked for the year 1801.

Hello all,

In 1797 Reverend Seth Williston, a missionary from the Connecticut Missionary Society itinerating in New York, wrote in his diary that he had just finished reading "seven Albany and New York papers for news" and noted that he felt disgusted that "there are two parties now in our land denominated Federalists, who are by the opposite party called Aristocrats, and ... democrats." Williston declared himself "satisfied with neither."

Your thoughts? Reconsidering Jefferson's quote: "We are all republicans, we are all federalists "

I am in the middle of teaching a course on the Early Republic.  Our task is to learn about this era while studying how historians have interpreted primary sources in writing secondary sources. This week we finished John Ferling’s Adams vs. Jefferson (Oxford, 2004). On pg. 205, Ferling claims that Jefferson wrote in his first inaugural speech, “We are all republicans, we are all federalists” without capitalization.
