The PhD Students in Asian and African Studies of the Department of Asian and North African Studies at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice are glad to present their doctoral symposium "Precarity: Possibilities for Humans and Things", to be held on March 29th-30th 2023 in Venice.

In this symposium, we would like to discuss the diverse forms in which ‘precarity’ emerges as possibilities to conceptualise alternative modes of co-existence. In mutual interaction with both humans and things, across times and spaces.

As the pandemic has made it palpable, anxieties can turn into pervasive affects with detrimental effects on the psychological well-being of the individual. To be anxious is to be on edge, not only psychologically, but also ontologically and existentially; or to use Heidegger’s terms, it is to be in a state of “groundless floating” (1996).
