Virtual Lecture Series: 

Der Exotismus war von jeher ein umstrittenes Konzept. Wer der Fremde Wertschätzung entgegenbrachte, sah sich im nationalistischen 19. Jahrhundert mit dem Vorwurf der „Ausländerei“ konfrontiert. Exotisten mögen sich als kosmopolitische Zivilisationskritiker mit einer antikolonialen Agenda ausgezeichnet haben. Doch literaturhistorisch geriet die Hochphase des literarischen Exotismus während der Jahrhundertwende als Zivilisationsflucht mit regressiven Tendenzen und aus postkolonialer Perspektive im Anschluss an Edward Said als Ästhetik einer imperialistischen Kultur ins Kreuzfeuer der Kritik.
