CFP: Masculinity and Slavery, SHEAR 2018

Colleagues,

I’m interested in organizing a panel on slavery and masculinity for the 2018 SHEAR conference, to be held in Cleveland on July 18-22.  Specifically, I seek 3 papers (and a commenter) addressing the ways in which bondsmen experienced and defined manhood in and through their interaction with enslaved women – for example, through marriage, courtship, father-daughter relationships, other kin relationships, friendships, labor, resistance, leisure pursuits, or religious activities.
