The SEALS committee is happy to announce the details of our next annual conference. SEALS is a venue for topics related to lingustics and language in Southeast Asia.

This year, the conference will be entirely virtual. Authors of successful abstracts will upload videos, which will all go live simultaneously on Tuesday, June 1st 2021.

At the start of the twentieth century the Haitian language, Kreyòl, was considered a vulgar dialect of French. It was excluded from written and formal contexts, and as a result most of the population was effectively barred from education and other institutional settings. A century later, it is considered a full-fledged language and is used in virtually all contexts.
