Meiji Japan in Global History
The year 2018 marks the 150th anniversary of the 1868 Meiji Restoration, arguably the most significant watershed in Japan’s history. The revolutionary Boshin civil war and coup d’état has become iconic of the country’s modernization and its subsequent cultural, economic, and diplomatic engagement with the nineteenth-century world. The event that nominally restored the emperor to power and ushered in a new era is being celebrated, remembered and invoked both at home and abroad.
