CFP: Europe is often seen as a continent of welfare states, providing resources to citizens and restricting immigration from overseas. But how much of Europe's ability to finance welfare and philanthropy is the consequence of its historic imperial revenues? This conference seeks to bring together historians of empire and state formation, philanthropy, taxation and welfare and scholars of other disciplines to examine the historic role of empires in shaping the contours of inequality that still define the world today. This workshop is organised by Professor Gurminder Bhambra and Dr.
