Call for Applications: Graduate Student Working Group on “Knowledge, Material Texts, and Jewish History”
This international working group aims to be a forum for graduate students and early stage postdoctoral researchers who study the materiality of Jewish texts – for example, Hebrew manuscripts, printed Yiddish books, Iberian archival materials, or other artifacts – and the gamut of knowledges cultivated therein – from kabbalah to the natural sciences, from halachic literature to alchemy.

The Genizah Research Unit at Cambridge University Library would like to announce the successful completion of the project ‘Medicine in medieval Egypt: creating online access to the medical corpus of the Cairo Genizah’, funded by a Wellcome Trust Research Resources Grant & Provision for Public Engagement (105086/Z/14/Z).
I am working on some short handwritten Hebrew texts by the 16th century Jewish convert to Christianity and author of several books, Christof Mandel. The texts are fully vocalized with some rather interesting peciularities:
- where hataf vowels are asked for, he always uses plain shvas;
- he never uses dagesh, while he marks every bet, kaf and tav which does not need a dagesh, with a rafe.
