Dr. Martha Swain has passed away

Dr. Martha Swain, a past president of the Southern Association for Women Historians, died last night.  According to a post on Facebook by Marjorie Spruill, Dr. Swain had been in hospice for several days, and her twin sister Margo was with her. She was a leading historian of Southern women’s history and published important books on the New Deal. Read more about her here:

The publications of the Black Protestant press represent one under-utilized source for the intellectual and cultural history of Black women in the South, likely due to lack of access, as most religious periodicals have not been fully digitized. My current book project examines the contributions of women to the A.M.E. Church Review, the quarterly publication of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, from 1884 to 1924.
