Susan Rather Awarded the 30th Annual Eldredge Prize

The Smithsonian American Art Museum has awarded the 2018 Charles C. Eldredge Prize for Distinguished Scholarship in American Art to Susan Rather for her book The American School: Artists and Status in the Late Colonial and Early National Era (New Haven and London: Yale University Press for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, 2016).

The prize is given annually by the museum for outstanding scholarship in the field of American art. A cash award of $3,000 is made to the author of a recent book-length publication that provides new insights into works of art, the artists who made them, or aspects of history and theory that enrich our understanding of the artistic heritage of the United States.

Jennifer L. Roberts Awarded the 29th Annual Eldredge Prize

The Smithsonian American Art Museum has awarded the 2017 Charles C. Eldredge Prize for Distinguished Scholarship in American Art to Jennifer L. Roberts, the Elizabeth Cary Agassiz Professor of the Humanities at Harvard University, for her book Transporting Visions: The Movement of Images in Early America (University of California Press, 2014). The jurors wrote in a joint statement: “Roberts’s adventurous account provides an exciting indication of where the field of American art is going as it pushes analysis of visual material into new terrain.”

Michael Lobel Awarded the 28th Annual Eldredge Prize

The Smithsonian American Art Museum has awarded the 2016 Charles C. Eldredge Prize for Distinguished Scholarship in American Art to Michael Lobel, professor of art history at Hunter College in New York City, for his book John Sloan: Drawing on Illustration (Yale University Press, 2014). The jurors cited the meticulous research and exceptionally high quality of prose of the book.
