New Book: Spiritual Ends: Religion and the Heart of Dying in Japan (University of California Press, 2023), Timothy O. Benedict.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I'm pleased to announce the publication of my new book, Spiritual Ends: Religion and the Heart of Dying in Japan (University of California Press, 2023). Paperback: $34.95.

Thanks to a generous subvention, the book is open-access (the ebook is free). If anyone would like to assign this book or part of it (I recommend Chp.2-4) for a survey class on religion in Japan, or a death and dying course, I would be happy to Zoom in to take questions about it.

Call for Chapters- 'Looking death in the eyes': Autoethnographic perspectives on death and end of life events

Death in no way occurs in isolation. Whether it occurs in close proximity or is observed from a distance, it has an engulfing effect on the deceased, the bereaved, and the witnesses (who might not be bereaved).
