Renaissance Society of America 2015 CFP for panel: Passions of Empires, Empires of Passions: The Geography of Early Modern Affect

In As You Like It, Jacques describes himself as melancholy, but not in the traditional ways described in literature. He instead feels “a melancholy of mine own, compounded of many simples, extracted from many objects, and indeed the sundry contemplation of my travels, in which my often rumination wraps me in a most humorous sadness” (4.1.14–18). This panel examines this sort of global affect, assembled from many things, arising from one’s travels.

Forming Panel for F & H 2014 Conference

Looking for two or three papers for this fall's Film & History conference in Madison, WI to form a panel in the "Cinematic City" area with the working title "The Golden Age of the Grubby City: Iconic Films of the 1970s." I'd like to do a paper on 1970s New York as bracketed by Dustin Hoffman's Times Square in Midnight Cowboy (1969) and Al Pacino's Meatpacking District in Cruising (1980) with stops in Hell's Kitchen with Jane Fonda in Klute (1971), on 42nd Street with Robert DeNiro in Taxi Driver (1976), and on the Hudson Piers with Faye Dunaw
