I am working on a study of Indian sovereignty and police powers during the early Republic, and am looking to form a session with others working on either Native politics and power or jurisdictional issues such as relations between state and federal courts. I am assembling a panel for SHEAR 2023 that will focus on alcohol and drug use in the Early Republic, or on slavery and slaveholders, or on some combination of the two topics. My paper will focus on the consequences of slaveholders’ heavy drinking on the people who they enslaved.
