"Hoover Dam and the Shaping of the American West," an NEH Summer Institute for college and university faculty, will be held in Boulder City and Las Vegas, Nevada, July 8-20. Over the course of the program we will explore three broad thematic areas that encompass the overarching implications of Hoover Dam’s construction: technology, environment, and human communities. Each of the days will focus on these themes through a purposeful triangulation of topics, people, and physical sites. Scholars from around the U.S.

I seek participants for a panel on modern transportation for the Urban History Association's Ninth Biennial Conference to be held October 18-21, 2019 in Columbia, South Carolina. Papers on roads, subways, or any other publically funded infrastructure in the post-railroad age would be most applicable, but I can be flexible with this. One of the goals I have for this panel is to use transportation and infrastructure as a framework for challenging or reorienting the traditional paradigm of the urban-rural divide.

The program includes five one-month residence grants for young researchers, working on their PhD thesis or preparing them for publishing, and five two-week residence grants for advanced researchers. The program also provides for three residences in digital urban history, jointly with the Lviv Interactive project, an online-encyclopedia representing the history of Lviv through places and spaces.
