The Duquesne University Department of Communication & Rhetorical Studies has extended the submission deadline for the 15th National Communication Ethics Conference in Pittsburgh, PA, from June 6–8, 2018 (Wednesday through Friday). The conference is taking place on Duquesne University’s campus and is welcoming paper and panel submissions in the following four content areas: (1) Communication Ethics and Argument, (2) Communication Ethics and Semiotics, (3) Communication Ethics and Communities of Practice, and (4) Communication Ethics and Crisis.

As programmable and networked computers move into the world with increasingly complex sensing systems, traditional questions about machine intelligence cease to be very useful to understand and conceptualize these developments. This talk will focus on cognition rather than intelligence and will compare the perspectives of biosemiotics on sign systems in biological organisms with the sensing capabilities of artificial cognitive systems.
