In July, AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd was sentenced to eight months of house detention by a court in New Zealand. Recently the Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius was released from prison and placed under house arrest. In Iran opposition leaders Mehdi Karroubi, Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mousavi’s wife Zahra Rahnavard have been under house arrest since February 2011 – without ever being tried in court.

To encourage excellence in the broad field of US government history, each year the Society for History in the Federal Government awards two prizes for books published during the previous calendar year.

The Henry Adams Award recognizes an outstanding book on some aspect of federal government history written by an author who is not employed by the federal government.  The George Pendleton Award recognizes an outstanding history written by a current or former federal government historian or sponsored by a government history office.
