The aim of this conference is to draw together scholars and writers from a variety of backgrounds to discuss the dimensions of writing lives broadly conceived. In what ways do the disciplines inform the ways in which life writing is practiced and perceived? What do interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspectives bring to the creation of life narratives?

The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee is pleased to present its Fellowship program. Two or three fellowships will be awarded each year to deserving scholars engaged in graduate level, post-doctoral, or independent study to conduct research in the JDC Archives, either in New York or Jerusalem. Research topics in the fields of twentieth century Jewish history, general history, and humanitarian assistance will be considered, as well as other areas of academic research covered in the JDC archival collections.

Many waves of mass violence against communists occurred in the twentieth century. They took place in Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa, in capitalist but also in socialist countries. They happened before, during and after the Cold War. Such persecutions came about in a variety of situations – in peacetime, wartime, civil wars and/or guerrilla wars, as a prelude to World War II, and in the aftermath of World Wars I and II.
