What was it like to be a soldier in Britain’s army in the redcoat era? While there is much written about wars, battles, tactics and fighting in this period, there is relatively little serious research on the nature of everyday military life. This new series aims to publish a range of interesting new books which explore a variety of questions about soldiering in this period.

The U.S. Brig NIAGARA, a reconstructed 19th-century sailing ship, owned by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and operated as a Sailing School Vessel (SSV) is currently accepting applications for its college-level History Under Sail program, May 10-31, 2017. This program blends a Public History curriculum with practical instruction while voyaging on an actual sailing ship. No experience necessary, but space is limited. The second Adam Matthew Digital essay prize consists of £500 plus one-year’s access to one Adam Matthew Digital archival collection chosen by the author. This prize, which began in 2015, will be awarded to the best essay submitted on any subject that relates to the Adam Matthew North American collections.

Starting 2017, small research grants for research at the Moravian Archives will be available for the first time. The Rev. Vernon H. Nelson Fund was established in 2011 to provide grants to researchers toward their expenses related to their research at the Moravian Archives in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
Together with the German Society of Pennsylvania, the German Historical Institute will sponsor two to four fellowships of up to four weeks for research at the Joseph Horner Memorial Library in Philadelphia between June 1 and July 15, 2017.
