The fight for preservation was a decades long struggle. After park visitation rose dramatically following World War II, improvements were made to national parks and new parks were established to handle the visitation. The San Juan National Historic Park included important battleground sites, species protection, and scenic views for tourists, leading to its protection as a National Park.
