Research centres: MODERNITAS and PHILIXTE are recruiting a full-time postdoctoral researcher to contribute on an interdisciplinary project entitled “The Artist, The Scientist and the Industrialist: Science, Economics and Sociopolitical Geography of Modernist Creative Networks between East and West (1880-1970)”. The candidate is expected to present their corresponding detailed research project (accepted historical time span is 1880-1960) as part of their application.

The selected candidate will collaborate with a number of other postdoctoral and PhD researchers within this high-scale research project.

Job description:

 

The MODERNITAS research centre-project “The Artist, The Scientist and the Industrialist” considers cultural history of various branches of European Modernism(s), focusing on the geographical regions often omitted in this context. This project assesses modernist culture as a result of a truly complicated linguistic, social, and political circumstances that were at play. Consequently, while insisting on aesthetic, socio-economic, scientific, and geopolitical specificities we also aim at stressing the fundamental shared features. Presenting the common ground of European Modernisms will be a major contribution to the understanding of common ground of contemporary European culture in general.

           The successful candidate will offer a tentative description of a realistic independent research project focused on one/or several of the following subject-clusters:

- Slavic comparatively envisaged modernism in interdisciplinary setting (visual arts/cinema/politics/economics/exact sciences/ religions/ philosophy/ psychology/theatre/education/geography/augmented reality)

- Slavic modernism and Belgian heritage

- Slavic modernism and French heritage

- Slavic modernism and the Anglophone world

- Slavic modernism and the relationship between tradition and innovation

 

As a postdoctoral researcher you will carry out the following tasks:

 

-Conduct research in the field of Slavic modernism with a focus on interdisciplinarity

-Offering a full-fledged daily administrative support to the MODERNITAS routine operation including budget management

-Setting up and conducting quantitative (and qualitative) research resulting in creating a digital map of Modernist geographies related to the MODERNITAS centre

-A first-hand support in organizing an exhibition related to the chosen exponents

-Disseminate research findings at (international) conferences and publish in international peer-reviews journals

-Limited guidance and support of PhD researchers and project management

-Take on a very limited teaching assignment

 

 

Profile

The candidate we are looking for will have the following qualifications and skills:

 

-A PhD from an internationally acclaimed institution of Higher education in any field of Humanities, or related discipline

-A proven track of academic successes including the number of peer-reviewed (published) research commensurate with the career stage

-A proven track of successful administrative tasks, including excellent command in IT sphere

-A keen interest in Slavic studies in comparative and cosmopolitan setting

-Experience with data analysis and (digital) research methodologies is an advantage

-Excellent communication and organizational skills, and a rigorous and methodical work ethic

-A B2-C1 knowledge of Czech is required. A good knowledge of English and/ or French is recommended. Knowledge of an additional Slavic language, especially Russian is a serious advantage.

-International mobility experience is expected

-Skills in digital humanities will be an advantage.

 

Eligibility

•        This program is opened to applicants of any age and any nationality, provided they did not reside or were employed in Belgium during the last three years.

•        We encourage applications from candidates who are neuro-diverse, disabled or come from ethnic groups that are under-represented in academia.

•        Applicants must have obtained a PhD degree for maximum 8 years at the latest on the application deadline. This latter maximum period is extended for one additional year per childbirth and/or adoption.
