CFP: Hybrid Communities, Societies, Spaces, and Subjectivities
The Canadian Association for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CALACS) and the University of Calgary’s Latin American Research Centre (LARC), in conjunction with the Canadian Association of Hispanists (CAH) and the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences (FHSS), present CALACS’s 2016 conference, to be held as part of the Congress for the Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Calgary, 1-3 June 2016:
Hybrid Communities, Societies, Spaces, and Subjectivities
The mix of Indigenous, African and European influences produced hybrid Latin American and Caribbean societies. From food, music, and language to literature and religion, hybrid heritages are deep and rich. Hybridity is not only a product of mixed societies, but also a perspective from which people in the region view the world: not as a lesser form of established ideas, but as a generator of new ones. In this spirit, we aim to reflect on and foster hybridity in a wide range of contexts and disciplines. This aim is part of the University’s commitment toward “Energizing communities” through Congress 2016, “rooted in the belief that knowledge and understanding are created through associations of shared values, grounded in respect for difference and diversity among all peoples.”
In addition to paper and panel proposals on any issue pertaining to Latin America and the Caribbean, we are especially interested in proposals that explore such themes as the emergence of new hybrid spaces between urban and rural settings; changing and fluid modes of economic and political organization; the creation of new forms of local, regional, national, and transnational identity through immigration and the inclusion of previously marginalized groups into new social orders; the emergence of hybrid voices in literature and cinema; and the emergence of new ideas about what constitutes established orders. Given CALACS’s interdisciplinary mandate, we are also especially interested in panels that explore hybridity from inter- and/or multi-disciplinary perspectives, which challenge and reformulate traditional approaches.
The deadline for receipt of proposals for panels or individual papers is November 1, 2015. Proposals may be submitted in Spanish, English, French, or Portuguese. Proposals must be submitted through https://www.can-latam.org/congress/2016/home.
Although membership in CALACS is not necessary for submitting proposals, all accepted participants must (1) become members CALACS (www.can-latam.org/membership), (2) register for the 2016 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences at http://congress2016.ca/, and (3) register for the CALACS conference, also at http://congress2016.ca/. Registration will open in January 2016. There will be discounts for early registration.
