No-party Candidates?

The only successful presidential candidate before Donald Trump who lacked any roots in the nominating party that I can think of on the spur of the moment is Zachary Taylor, who had never voted or served in political office before his election as a Whig in 1848.  Military officers like Eisenhower and Grant had been courted by both parties, as Taylor was, but they did have some connection to the Republicans who nominated them and they ran on platforms fairly consistent with the party's past policy positions.  Am I missing someone else?

Looking for a panel to join for the 2017 AHA

Dear all,

I am seeking to join a panel for the 2017 AHA conference that deals with recent American political history. My own research examines the life and career of H.R. Haldeman. My research addresses a number of issues regarding American political history after 1945 including, but not limited to, the history of political campaigns, advertising, private business’ interactions with politics, political advisers, and the history of the Nixon administration/era.

OAH Panel on the Politics of Violence seeking additional members

I am putting together a panel on the politics of violence in 20th century U.S. history for the OAH in New Orleans in April 2017. We have a couple panelists and are looking for a few more participants. We are open to framing the panel broadly/around other panelists' work. We currently have someone working on gun control and another person working on public debates about decreasing violence in the 1960s and 1970s. Email clamberson@angelo.edu if you are interested in joining.

Call for Papers: Politics and the Economy

The Marine Corps University Journal is looking for manuscripts to consider for its Fall 2016 issue, and we are especially interested in acquiring several articles focusing on the economic impact on politics and policy. A review essay on appropriate titles can be submitted or proposed also. Articles are due by March 31, 2016 and will be considered for the Fall issue or other issues depending on the responses to the call.

We are interested in diverse perspectives on the economy in terms of:

Sources on McGovern-Fraser Commission Reform?

I'm looking for secondary literature on the changes in the Democratic Party's delegate nomination process as a result of the Douglas-Fraser Commission's reform recommendations. The reforms are mentioned frequently, but I'm surprised that I cannot find works that address them more substantially and substantively (Bruce Miroff's book is the exception). Perhaps I'm missing something obvious. I'd be most grateful for any suggestions of literature, whether from historians or political scientists.

Announcing the new Resources tab

Greetings H-Net subscribers!

We are pleased to announce the release of the Resources tab, which is now located at the top of all of our Networks. Prior to the release, there was a Media tab that chronologically aggregated all of the contributions uploaded to a particular Network. While the Media tab clearly had some basic archival value, with the development of many diverse projects making use of this material on our Networks, editors asked for a better way to organize that content. The Resources tab is the fruit of those aims.
