The Health, Disease, and Popular Culture area addresses a number of topics and approaches in historical and contemporary perspective including:
Cultural contexts of narratives of illness from patient and health practitioner perspectives in novels, short stories, memoirs, graphic comics, etc.
Portrayals of patients and health professionals in marketing, advertising, social media, film, television, etc.
Social determinants of health discourse including race, ethnicity, gender and sexuality, class, place, population health equity
Global Health, Climate Change
Cultural discourses of infectious disease outbreaks, epidemics, pandemics, emerging infectious diseases, chronic illnesses and noncommunicable diseases
Healthy Lifestyle and Healthy Promotion in popular media
Food Security and Insecurity as portrayed in popular media
Health politics and policy portrayals in visual and print culture
The Northeast Popular Culture Association (NEPCA) will hold its 2018 annual conference at Worcester State University, Massachusetts the weekend of October 19-20, 2018. The DEADLINE for submission of proposals is June 1, 2018. NEPCA welcomes individual papers and complete panels. Please direct program questions to Rob Weir at weir.r@comcast.net
