A Portrait of California is a report produced by Measure of America, a project of the Social Science Research Council. Using the American Human Development Index, based on offical government data on health, education, longevity, and other elements of standard of living, it analyzes the varied opportunities Californians of many different communities, up and down the state, have of achieving their potential, their goals. The report ranks all 233 US Census neighborhoods in the state according to its placement on the Human Development Index. It's a fascinating study full of comparisons on a variety of subjects, from parks to libraries in Calfiornia communities. You can download a pdf of the report at this site or order printed copies. Terrific for the classroom or just personal edification and enlightenment.
