The conference will take place at the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site (UK) and seeks to explore the heritage of bridges as:

- remarkable physical structures that connect places and cultures

- spectacular feats of engineering, connecting an industrialised world

- symbolic and metaphorical markers in the landscape, romanticised in art, literature and film

- Communities united and communities divided by bridges

- The language of the bridge – metaphors and meanings in social life

- Poetics of the bridge – representing the bridge in art, literature and film

- National and local iconographies of bridges

- Love and death on the bridge

- Touring bridges – travel narratives and tourism economies

- Alternative bridge crossings – tunnels and ferries
