The State Historical Society of Iowa (SHSI) announces a grant program for the 2017/2018 academic year. SHSI will award up to ten stipends of $1,000 each to support original research and interpretive writing related to the history of Iowa or Iowa and the Midwest. Preference will be given to applicants proposing to pursue previously neglected topics or new approaches to or interpretations of previously treated topics. SHSI invites applicants from a variety of backgrounds, including academic and public historians, graduate students, and independent researchers and writers.
The Wisconsin Historical Society is pleased to announce that the first batch of Wisconsin newspapers are now available on the Library of Congress historic newspaper site Chronicling America. Currently available is the Wood County Reporter of Grand Rapids, 1858-02-17 to 1890-03-13 with more of this title to come shortly.

The State of Iowa was just 11 years old when some of its early residents had the foresight to create the State Historical Society of Iowa, in 1857. Even then, they recognized the value of Iowa history and wanted to safeguard it for generations to come.

Baker will discuss “Going Local: How New Research on Individual States is Shaping Our Understanding of the Civil War” at the State Historical Society of Iowa, Centennial Building, 402 Iowa Avenue in Iowa City. The program is free and open to the public.
