Illinois Humanities enthusiastically invites Illinois authors, educators, artists, and other cultural practitioners to apply to join the 2016-17 edition of its Road Scholars Speakers Bureau.  The application form is available here.  The application deadline is Friday, June 17, 2016, at 5 PM, but anyone who needs some additional time to complete a proposal is welcome to contact Matt Meacham, program coordinator, at matt.meacham@ilhumanities.org or (312) 422-5589.

The Illinois Humanities Road Scholars bureau will celebrate its 20thanniversary in 2017.  It enables Illinois writers, storytellers, historians, folklorists, musicians, and living history actors, among others, to share their expertise and enthusiasm with people throughout the state. It also gives local nonprofit organizations opportunities to present compelling, free-admission cultural programs to their communities for a modest fee.

Proposals for presentations on any humanities-related subject and in any format are welcome. Illinois Humanities will be especially interested in proposals for programs in which the speaker begins with a brief presentation about a particular topic or theme and then leads the audience in a discussion or activity related to it.

Illinois Humanities will also welcome proposals for presentations that will…

  • address topics of interest to people between ages 16 and 25
  • be available in Spanish and relevant to Latina/o Illinoisans
  • explore the future of agriculture in Illinois and its potential cultural implications
  • discuss issues related to public education
  • or address topics associated with major anniversaries of significant cultural occurrences in 2017, such as the 500thanniversary of the Protestant Reformation or the 100thanniversaries of the beginning of the Great Migration (as so designated by the Chicago Defender), the East St. Louis Riots, and the entry of the United States into World War I.

Those who have questions may contact Matt Meacham at matt.meacham@ilhumanities.org or (312) 422-5589.
