Polymath: An Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences Journal is seeking articles for a forthcoming special issue on interdisciplinary approaches to regional development.

Regional development has gone through a rapid pace of change and several new interdisciplinary perspectives have emerged in recent decades. At the same time, the methodology has shown surprising development in the wake of the turbulence that characterizes the current global scene. This special issue will use complimentary interdisciplinary approaches to understand contexts, approaches, policies, and key variables that promote and prescribe policies for regional development in turbulent times. This special issue welcomes explorations in regional development from interdisciplinary perspectives rooted in fields including economics, geography, management, psychology, regional science, and sociology, among others.

The aim of this special issue is to provide an interdisciplinary forum for researchers and practitioners to contribute to the knowledge and practice of regional development in terms of both processes and patterns. It is an opportunity to address the crises and challenges emerging from the rapid urban transformation sweeping the planet, fueled by advances in electronic communication and transportation technology, and a movement from the service economy towards a new, greener form of manufacturing of goods as well as services.

Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:

  1. Recent theoretical advances and future challenges in regional development
  2. Theories of regional development
  3. Patterns of regional development
  4. Regional development factors—territorial and human capital, infrastructure, entrepreneurship
  5. Knowledge, creativity and regional development
  6. Regional growth and development measurement methods
  7. Regional growth and development policies
  8. Contemporary regional development issues and challenges
