Call for Papers

Tenth Annual Symposium of the Ernst herzfeld Society in Hamburg July 3rd-6th, 2014

Dear Colleagues,

The Ernst Herzfeld-Society for the Research of Islamic Art and Archaeology
(EHG) and the Universität Hamburg have the pleasure to invite you to the Tenth Colloquium of the EHG.
It will be held at the

Asien Afrika Institut of Universtät Hamburg between July 3rd and  6th, 2014.

The conference will be under the title

Islamic Archaeology, Material Culture, and Art History
-    Intersections and Research Aims –

The conference will first of all present new and current research in the fields of archaeology, material culture and art history. Secondly, it will continue and stimulate the necessary discussion on the different directions and challenges of our field. It seems to be in transition, in museums and in universities. Excavations face difficulties as they have never before due to the political uprisings and wars. Conversations in the past year left the impression that the definition of our field still remains an exciting and controversial topic.  We all come from different scholarly backgrounds and approach our common subject with rather diverse methods and research questions.

Hamburg offers for such discussion probably a good background. The founding of the University is connected with Carl Heinrich Becker, one of the pioneers of material culture for the societies creating it. Becker was a close friend of Ernst Herzfeld, and opened his journal “Der Islam” for preliminary excavation reports of Samarra and for Fritz Saxl on Art History.
Hamburg was also one of the places where Kurt Erdmann, later director of the Museum of Islamic Art in Berlin, taught.

We would welcome, if you are able to submit a title and an abstract of no more than 1,000 characters of your presentation until May 31, 2014. Each presentation is limited to 20 minutes and 10 minutes discussion. A meeting of the graduate and PhD students is scheduled for Thursday afternoon, July 3rd. A poster session is possible.
The symposium proper begins on Friday, July 4th, in the morning. The annual meeting of the society will be held as usual on Saturday afternoon.
Please direct any correspondence about the conference to the team of

Stefan Heidemann and Simon Gundelfinger.

Registration and participation is without any fee, and guests to the symposium are welcome. We are grateful for the generous support of the Hamburgische Wissenschaftliche Stiftung.

We kindly request to organize your travel and accommodation by yourselves.
Hamburg has a wide range of hotels and Bed-and-Breakfast accommodations.
Information on that will be sent later.
The Ernst Herzfeld Society and the Universität Hamburg are looking forward to welcome you to its tenth Colloquium.

With kind regards
PD Dr. Martina Müller-Wiener                 Stefan Heidemann and Simon
