JOB: Part-Time Lecturer in German Theater | New York University Berlin (15.11.2021)

New York University (NYU) Berlin is seeking a part-time lecturer to teach a course on German Theater: History & Practice. The course examines German theater since the beginning of the 20th century, from Expressionism to contemporary postdramatic forms of writing and performance. Students closely read relevant plays and theory by theater makers, while exploring aesthetics and performance issues as they have changed over time. They are introduced to key philosophical and theoretical debates of the period, and how these are translated into theater productions. In addition, the course offers practical insights into Berlin’s theater landscape, including visits to Berlin theaters and discussions with contemporary theater makers of Berlin’s main stages and the Free Scene.

The course is taught in English, meets once per week for three hours, and runs approximately from January 26 to May 16, 2022. 

Candidates should have a track record of academic publications in the field and be passionate about teaching a very diverse cohort of undergraduate students. The course is part of the actor training program at NYU Berlin: Stanislavski, Brecht and Beyond. The pedagogy should nevertheless ensure accessibility for a variety of learners. • Doctorate in a relevant discipline.

• A minimum of three years teaching experience at university level.
• Fluency in English and experience teaching in English.
• German work-permit and tax number at the time of application, covering the entire period of the employment.
