STIP: Call for applications: PhD program, Department of German, New York University (04.01.2022)

for its PhD program. The deadline for applications is January 4, 2022.***

The Department of German at NYU has long been home to one of the most
innovative and theoretically rigorous programs in German Studies.
Drawing on a broad spectrum of expertise, its faculty teach German
literature, critical thought, philosophy, political theory, the history
of art and of media, and the history of the sciences from the early
modern period to the present. The emphasis on both critical theory and
the history of literature and culture distinguishes NYU's German program
and ensures excellent preparation for the profession.

Located in downtown Manhattan, NYU German collaborates closely with
NYU’s Deutsches Haus and offers ample opportunities to engage with the
vibrant intellectual community that New York City has to offer. Close
cooperation with other departments and programs, including Comparative
Literature, History, and Media, Culture, and Communication, make
inter-departmental resources an integral part of the program. All
students have the opportunity to spend a year of study and/or teaching
at the department's sister institutions in Berlin, Zurich, and Munich.

NYU provides stipends of approximately $30,000/year for 5 years,
including health insurance. Additional funding for travel is available,
as is additional summer funding (guaranteed during the first three
years). Compensation for teaching is in addition to the stipend.
Graduate students in German at NYU also receive thorough training in
second language pedagogy, with the opportunity to teach for three or
more semesters.

Applicants should have a strong background in the study of literature,
philosophy, or any neighboring field at the MA or BA levels, as well as
mastery of the German language.

1. a personal statement outlining the applicant's goals and reasons for
applying to the program;
2. a recent sample of the applicant's academic writing in either German
or English (15-20 pages);
3. at least three letters of recommendation;
4. a complete set of official academic transcripts;
5. TOEFL or IELTS scores for non-native speakers of English;
6. a resume or CV
