Applications are open for PhD programmes in Modern Languages at the University of Bristol for September 2023 entry. This includes the PhD in German, as well as in Translation and in Comparative Literatures and Cultures:

We have two main funding routes:

A number of University Scholarships and Graduate Teaching Assistantships (deadline 30 January 2023), allocated to the Faculty of Arts:

The South, West and Wales Doctoral Training Partnership (SWW DTP, deadline 16 January 2023).

A particular feature of this DTP is the expectation that students are supervised jointly in two of the partnership's institutions. Alongside an intensive programme of training and placements, this creates a strong sense of cross-disciplinary and cross-institutional cohorts in the DTP, in addition to their main institutional 'home'.

Both schemes offer full funding to international (including EU/EEA) as well as to students from the UK. They are also highly competitive, and potential applicants are encouraged to get in touch with potential supervisors, and/or with the Head of Subject for German, Dr Steffan Davies (, to plan an application.

There's further information about research in the School and in the German Department here:, with staff profiles linked at the foot of the page.

Modern Languages at Bristol was placed 4th in the Times Higher rankings of UK REF 2021 results, and achieved a 100% 4* rating for our research environment – an environment to which we would be delighted to welcome a new cohort of research students in German and across our languages and disciplines.
