STIP: Doctoral Fellowships in German Studies, Brown University (12.10.2022)

The Department of German Studies at Brown University invites applications to its Ph.D. program, focused on the areas of German literature, literary theory and aesthetics.

The Department of German Studies at Brown is a vibrant and close-knit community known for its work in German literature and philosophy. The Ph.D. program in German Studies emphasizes questions of theoretical literary studies including literature, philology and philosophy as well as fundamental problems of aesthetics, poetics, rhetoric, psychoanalysis and critical theory. The Department collaborates closely with related departments such as Comparative Literature, Modern Culture and Media, Philosophy, History and the interdisciplinary and innovative Cogut Institute for the Humanities.

The program reflects the unique "open curriculum" at Brown which allows students to take courses across fields and disciplines. Students work across disciplines to fashion an individually inflected course of study. Ph.D. students are eligible to apply for the Open Graduate Education program, in which they have the opportunity to complete a Master's degree in a related department, providing strong interdisciplinary professional qualifications. Other opportunities for innovative, interdisciplinary research include: the Mellon-funded Collaborative Humanities Fellowship, the Cogut Institute Fellowship, and the Pembroke Center Fellowship.

Founded in 1764, Brown University is among the most respected universities in the U.S.. It is one of the 8 Ivy League universities in the U.S. and is located in Providence, Rhode Island. Providence is a vibrant New England city close to the Atlantic coast, near Boston and a 3-hour train ride to New York.

Financial support is guaranteed for 6 years for students in good standing and includes health insurance. Normal support consists of a combination of fellowship and teaching, thus ensuring that graduates are well trained for a professional career in the instruction of German language and literature.
