When we place texts and images into relation, what tasks do we ask them to perform in our analyses? If we interrogate the nature of the text-image relation, in what ways does it elude us, slipping between the constraints of formalism and historicism into warrens of, one end of the spectrum, hyper-specificity or, on the other, fundamental indeterminacy?
Seeking to uncover the critical approach in action, this PERLEGO-Network workshop, funded by TORCH. The Oxford research council in the humanities, brings together researchers from Oxford and the Berlin Universities (BUA), inviting participants to exchange research avenues, problematics and methodological approaches to locate points of tension in our assumptions about the ‘work’ we expect texts and images to do in relation to each other, especially where this exposes the disciplinary fault lines that shape our thinking at the level of ‘comfort’ as much as expertise.
The workshop consists of group discussion of text clusters and short individual presentations.
