CFP MLA 2019: Contemporary Cultural Interactions in Transylvania

Julia Elsky Discussion

Please find below the Call for Papers for our proposal for a Special Session at the Modern Language Association (MLA) Convention, to be held in Chicago on 3-6 January 2019.

Contemporary Cultural Interactions in Transylvania

Hungary and Romania have had a close cultural relationship in Transylvania for many generations. In this multi-ethnic region, Romanian, Hungarian, and German cultural and literary expressions have flourished. Similar backgrounds and approaches, similar and divergent themes have made for vibrant responses from authors on all sides. The result is not a mere interaction of the various groups, but rather informed parts of a whole. The multi-ethnic milieu that informs the literary and cultural approaches of the region is a prime example of textual transcriptions reaching across communities. Papers could address, among other topics, the works of Ádam Bodor, György Dragoman, Romulus Bucor, Eginald Schlattner, Marta Petreu, Alexandru Vlad, Horia Ursu, and many others.

We invite papers on multi-ethnic interactions in contemporary Transylvanian literature and culture, broadly defined. Papers may address works in Romanian, Hungarian, or German. All papers will be presented in English. This Special Session proposal is a collaborative session with LLC Hungarian and LLC Romanian. Please send a 300-word abstract by March 1, 2018 to Enikö Molnár Basa (eniko.basa@verizon.net) and Julia Elsky (jelsky@luc.edu).
