Dear Colleagues,

The Lusophone African Studies Organization (LASO) invites proposals for LASO’s sponsored panel and roundtable sessions at the 62nd Annual Meeting of the African Studies Association in Boston, MA (November 21-23, 2019). The theme for this year’s ASA is “Being, Belonging and Becoming in Africa.”

LASO encourages (but does not require) that panel and roundtable proposals include research on more than one Lusophone African country and are multidisciplinary in scope. Although ASA rules allow LASO formally to sponsor only one panel (sponsored panels are guaranteed acceptance by the ASA Program Committee), we are happy to assist in organizing and publicizing additional panels on Lusophone countries/topics. If you have an idea for a panel or roundtable but not enough committed participants, please let us know and we will do our best to help you fill out your proposed session.

Proposals should be sent to Heidi Gengenbach (
heidi.gengenbach@umb.edu) and Abel Amado (abel.amado@simmons.edu) by no later than March 12, 2019
Please submit your proposal as a Word attachment. Panel proposals must include individual paper abstracts and contact information for each of the proposed participants in addition to the panel abstract. Please bear in mind that ASA membership is required in order to submit a proposal.

Further information about the conference theme, the format for paper and panel proposals, and what proposal reviewers will be looking for is available on the ASA website.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me and/or Abel Amado at the addresses above.

On behalf of the LASO Executive Committee, I look forward to hearing from you!

Thank you for your support, and warm regards,

Heidi Gengenbach
