International Conference African Ivory: Commerce and Objects, 15th -18th centuries

This conference, organized by the international project “African Ivories in the Atlantic World” (PTDC/EPH-PAT/1810/2014) aims to convene specialists and contributions on the study of African ivories between the 15th and 18th centuries, associated with Portuguese and Brazilian sources and collections. It intends to provide a forum for the presentation and debate of the ongoing research, as well as a platform for discussion of related historiographical concepts and perspectives. The main topics for the conference include ivory provenance and chronology, their relation with primary sources, ivories in early trans-Atlantic commerce, and the circulation of raw and carved ivory in between and within African, European and Brazilian contexts.
