CFP: LASO Panel/ASA 2018—Deadline Saturday, March 10, 2018 (midnight EST)

Heidi Gengenbach Discussion

Greetings!

I’m writing with a gentle reminder that the Luso-African Studies Organization (LASO) will be accepting proposals for our sponsored panel at the 2018 African Studies Association meeting (Atlanta, Nov. 29-Dec. 1, 2018) until midnight on Saturday, March 10 (Eastern Standard Time).

The theme for this year’s conference is “Energies: Power, Creativity and Afro-Futures,” and ASA’s deadline for proposals is March 15, 2018. A lively discussion at LASO’s December meeting generated several promising panel topics: Post-conflict Africa before the 21st century; Resource Extraction/petro-gas/mining; Elections, democracy, corruption, and economic development. We hope that the individuals who expressed interest in organizing a panel on one of these themes are still able and willing to do so!

For our sponsored panel, LASO encourages proposals that include research on more than one Lusophone African country, are multidisciplinary in scope, and are thematically or theoretically driven. Please note that although ASA rules allow LASO to sponsor only one panel (sponsored panels are guaranteed acceptance by the ASA Program Committee), we will happily assist in forming additional panels on Lusophone countries/topics.

Proposals for panels should be sent to Heidi Gengenbach (heidi.gengenbach@umb.edu) and Abel Amado (abel.amado@simmons.edu). Please submit your proposal as a Word attachment. Panel proposals must include paper abstracts from each of the proposed participants in addition to a panel abstract. We will contact panel organizers with our decision by Tuesday, March 13, and we will be responsible for submitting the official proposal to the ASA. Please note, however, that up-to-date ASA membership will be required for all panel participants.

Submissions may include notices of promotions and other career mobilities, research travel plans, or any other Luso-African-related information not usually shared via the H-LusoAfrica listserv.

Please send your submissions to Abel Amado at abel.amado@simmons.edu
