Domestic Goods: Silence speaks in our objects, clothing, keepsakes, and interiors
Articles are invited for possible inclusion in a special issue of Italian Canadiana that will focus on the theme of the domestic articles that are special to Italian immigrants to North America.
What domestic goods speak to Italian immigrants and their heirs? How can we speak of intersectional identities in Italian immigrants' children, grandchildren, and great children? The collection will call upon the first (1900-1918), second (1950-1970), and third (1980-present) waves of Italian immigrants to North America to examine the items we cherish and those we pass on. The items may have a monetary value, but what if the value of the object is more in the form of palpable memory? Can the mundane domestic goods of a pot or colander speak of a mother or the alarm clock speak of a father? What resonates in the prosaic realm?
The articles in the collection will draw on autotopography (Gonzalez), the archive (Derrida), vibrant matter (Bennett), atmospheric attunements (Stewart), thing theory (Brown), and the social life of things (Appadurai).
Proposals should include your contact information (name, address, telephone, email), short bioblurb (100 words), the title of the article, and article abstract (150 words).
Please send your article proposal directly to Professor Lorella Di Cintio at ldicintio@ryerson.ca
Deadline for article proposal: 1 January 2023
Deadline for article submission: 1 March 2023
Proposals and articles will be accepted in any of the journal’s three official languages: English, French, or Italian.
