Query: Great Eastern beached for dismantling 1889; looking for image and archival information

Roland Wenzlhuemer's picture

Dear colleagues,

in an online search, I recently came across an absolutely fascinating image of the Great Eastern beached at New Ferry to be dismantled in 1889. As far as I can see, it's a coloured photograph. A version of it can be found here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/history/british/victorians/seven_wonders_gallery_09.shtml However, neither the BBC website nor a few other websites that feature the image carry references or archival information. So far, I have not been successful in tracking the source of the image or even making an educated guess who made it and where the original could probably be located. Now, I was wondering whether the H-Maritime community knows more here and would be willing to share a few thoughts on the background of the image.

Many thanks and best wishes
