Spring School Mediterranean History
28-31 March 2023
Organizers: Manuel Borutta & Sven Reichardt
The Mediterranean region is a contact zone of Africa, Asia, and Europe that was closely intertwined even before modern globalization. Since ancient times, borders in this region have constantly shifted. Mediterranean history has generated important debates and new approaches in the humanities: maritime interactions, changing nature of human-environment relations, and the significance of religious and cultural interactions. More recently, Mediterranean approaches and perspectives have also been tested in modern and contemporary history concerning topics such as colonialism and fascism, migration, and tourism.
The Spring School will highlight crucial topics of Mediterranean history from antiquity to the present. On the one hand, group work with sources is planned. On the other hand, there will be keynote speeches by historians from different periods. The Spring School will be accompanied by an attractive supporting program with excursions to the city of Constance and the Lake Constance region. Our working language will be English. The University of Konstanz will cover the costs of accommodation and meals.
The Spring School is scheduled for March 28-31, 2023. It is primarily aimed at students who wish to study the future international English-language Master's program in Mediterranean History, which is expected to start at the University of Konstanz in the winter term of 2023/24. Please send your application for the Spring School (CV, letter of motivation, Transcript of Records) by December 15, 2022, to firstname.lastname@example.org.
