“The Company Town at Seabrook Farms, NJ”: Internment, Migration, & Resettlement in the World War II Era

July 16 to July 27, 2018

Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ

During this two-week program, students learn about the history of Seabrook Farms, a frozen foods and canning agribusiness located in southern New Jersey, and its relevance to the history of World War II. Students will explore how this company town recruited and sponsored incarcerated Japanese Americans and Japanese Peruvians, guestworkers from the Caribbean, and Eastern European refugees to come to southern New Jersey as agricultural laborers, and will be encouraged to workshop curricular materials relating to migration, resettlement, and incarceration for use in their own classrooms.

Full-time, part-time, and substitute teachers are all eligible to apply. K-12 administrators, librarians, and other school system personnel are also eligible. Applications due March 1.

Participating teachers will receive a $2,100 stipend to help cover travel and housing expenses.
