Bukhara (Uzbekistan) is mainly know for its old city with splendid examples of Islamic architecture. The surrounding vast oasis features archaeological sites such as Varakhsha. However, only recently has archaeological research systematically covered the oasis of Bukhara, looking for its origins and the development of settlement from pre-Islamic through Islamic periods.
Dr. Rocco Rante is researcher-archaeologist at the Musée du Louvre and habilitated at the University of Paris-Sorbonne-Panthéon. He has conducted extensive archaeological fielwork in Iran and Uzbekistan, at sites such as Nishapur and Paykend. Among his book publications are Nishapur revisited: Stratigraphy and Pottery of the Qohandez (2013, with Annabelle Collinet), Rayy: from its origins to the Mongol invasion. An Archaeological and Historiographical Study (2015) and The Bukhara Oasis (2 vols, 2019 and forthcoming, with Djamal Mirzaakhmedov, Florian Schwarz and Luigi Tronca).
