Mekelle University, Ethiopia

“Regional and Global Ethiopia – Interconnections and Identities”

24 January 2017

Dear Participants!

This is the first circular from the Organising Committee of the 20th  International Conference of Ethiopian Studies (ICES20) to take place in Mekelle University in 2018.

Mekelle University was assigned to organise the ICES20 in Mekelle during the closing ceremony of the ICES19 at Warsaw University in 2015 and had happily accepted that great challenge. Since then a “Main Organising Committee” has been formed at MU, with specialised committees supporting it, together with an MU Conference Board, involving the deans and directors in social sciences and humanities, and also an Advisory Board.

This prestigious Conference will be organised in close communication with the International Organising Committee (IOC), the Institute of Ethiopian Studies (IES) and other stakeholders, academic institutions and partners worldwide, following the long established tradition.

The webpage of the ICES20 is ready – it will be updated regularly, you can consult it for the upcoming calls for panels and papers, the conference theme and first practical planning. The address is:    or

The exact date will be decided within the coming weeks in cooperation with the stakeholders. It is already known that it will be in the second half of 2018.
