MCUP publishes the Journal of Advanced Military Studies (JAMS) on topics of concern to the Marine Corps and the Department of Defense through the lens of various disciplines, including international relations, political science, security studies, and political economics.
Our Fall 2022 issue will have a broadly construed theme: Conflict on the Seas This issue will address great-power competition on the world’s oceans, not limited to the North Atlantic, Arctic Ocean, the South China Sea, and other contested littoral and oceanic gray zone conflicts. How can the United States and its allies remain competitive in what is becoming an increasingly contested environment? Russia is rebuilding Cold War-era military bases in the Arctic and China considers itself a near-Arctic state with the right to conduct scientific research, pursue economic resources, and play an active role in governance in the region. China continues to construct military outposts on artificial islands in the South China Sea, while the United States has increased its naval presence in the region to safeguard freedom of navigation operations. The rapidly receding sea ice is enabling access to a range of highly valuable resources. Climate change and globalization are turning the region into the epicenter of geopolitical rivalry, where an increasingly aggressive Russia and China push farther into the region.
Authors are encouraged to explore this issue from a variety of perspectives—both from allies’ perspectives of the issues they face, the U.S. perspective, the impact of climate change on these conflicts, or even discussions of adversaries’ strategies in issues of strategic importance to the United States and its allies and what can be done to stay competitive in the littorals and gray zones of oceanic great-power conflict in the near and not-too-distant future.
JAMS is a peer-reviewed journal, and submissions should be 4,000–10,000 words, footnoted, and formatted according to Chicago Manual of Style (17th edition). Junior faculty and advanced graduate students are encouraged to submit. MCUP is also looking for book reviewers from international studies, political science, and contemporary history fields.
